Bright Night-Time Lights Linked to Increased Stroke Risk, Study Finds

New research reveals that exposure to bright, artificial outdoor lighting at night significantly raises the likelihood of stroke, particularly in urban areas.

  • Continuous exposure to bright, artificial, outdoor night-time light is linked to a higher risk of stroke, according to new research.
  • People with the highest levels of exposure to outdoor light at night had a 43% increased risk of developing cerebrovascular disease.
  • The study, conducted in Ningbo, China, also found that air pollution significantly increases stroke risk.
  • Exposure to high levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions was associated with a 41% to 50% and 31% increased risk of stroke, respectively.
  • Researchers advise reducing exposure to bright, outdoor night-time light and air pollution to mitigate stroke risk.
