Brief January Thaw Gives Way to Two Rounds of Rain in Southern New England

Gulf moisture drawn north by a Midwest storm is set to deliver a light round Friday evening followed by a heavier burst Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Overview

  • Highs in the 40s to near 50 degrees mark a short-lived warmup that is several degrees above average for early January.
  • Light, spotty showers are expected between about 4–6 p.m. Friday, tapering by around 9 p.m. after a mostly dry day.
  • A dry and mild Saturday daytime period is forecast before a stronger rain moves in around 7–8 p.m., lingering into Sunday morning.
  • Rainfall totals of roughly 0.5 to 1 inch are forecast for southern New England, with mainly rain south and a wintry mix or snow confined to higher northern elevations.
  • Overnight fog and localized refreeze could produce slick spots Friday morning as southerly winds become gusty at 20–30 mph ahead of the systems, and the Patriots game is expected to be dry but colder in the 30s.
