Bridge Launcher Collapses on Bharatmala Project in Bihar, Six Workers Hurt

An official probe has been opened to determine whether a technical fault or construction lapse caused the collapse.

Overview

  • A launcher used to build an overbridge on the NH-139W Bharatmala corridor near Jalalpur in Vaishali district collapsed on Thursday, trapping workers under heavy ironwork before rescue teams reached the site.
  • Rescuers used gas cutters to free trapped labourers and local police and administrative officials attended the scene to manage the operation and the growing crowd.
  • Six workers were treated at Sadar Hospital in Hajipur and two were sent to Patna in serious condition, with named patients including Ram Bharose Sah and Pramod Chaudhary.
  • Villagers and workers told reporters that safety gear such as harnesses was not provided and that parts of the structure had shown signs of sinking, claims that officials say are under investigation.
  • The collapse affects a nearly 38.8-kilometre Bharatmala road link between Bakarpur and Manikpur and could prompt tighter site inspections and accountability measures if the probe finds construction or safety lapses.
