Bridge Collapses in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk Kill Seven, Ignite Locomotive Blaze

Overview

  • On May 31, a road bridge in Bryansk region collapsed beneath a Moscow-Klimov passenger train, causing it to derail and killing seven people while injuring 35.
  • Rescue teams of around 180 personnel and 60 vehicles have been working at the Bryansk site to search wreckage and assist the wounded, many of whom remain hospitalized.
  • In the early hours of June 1 in Kursk region, another bridge gave way under a locomotive near Zheleznogorsk, sending it onto a highway and sparking a fire.
  • Both drivers aboard the locomotive in the Kursk incident sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital; no fatalities have been reported there.
  • The Russian emergency ministry and Moscow Railways have opened investigations into suspected illegal interference in railway transport operations.
