Brest Café Attack: Prosecutor Opens Inquiry as Police Hunt Masked Assailants

Investigators are reviewing videos following a coordinated assault widely attributed by officials to far-right militants targeting a left-leaning bar.

Overview

  • A group of roughly 20 to 30 masked attackers used bats and tear gas on patrons at the Café de la Plage just after midnight on Sept. 20–21, injuring several people.
  • The Brest prosecutor opened an inquiry against persons unknown for aggravated violence and aggravated damage, assigning the case to the central police station’s judicial unit.
  • Investigators have received at least four videos of the assault while exterior CCTV is reportedly unusable, and a source cited by ICI Breizh Izel says the attackers’ profile and method suggest a hooligan milieu.
  • Authorities have reported no arrests; the prefecture cites only a property-damage complaint so far, and witnesses say police arrived about 10 minutes later with BAC officers using tear gas to disperse would-be pursuers.
  • Injury counts vary from three to four minor wounds reported by local outlets, the mayor condemned the raid as far-right, and hundreds gathered the next evening in a solidarity rally.
