Brazil's Top Court Orders House Arrest for 10 Convicted in Bolsonaro Coup Case as Police Enforce Nationwide

Justice Alexandre de Moraes tightened custody in response to a thwarted escape attempt.

Overview

  • Federal Police executed the Supreme Federal Court orders across the Federal District and the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Goiás, Bahia and Tocantins.
  • Those confined must remain at home under active geolocation and are barred from social media, visits and contact with other defendants, with passports surrendered and firearm permits suspended.
  • The clampdown followed Silvinei Vasques removing his ankle monitor, entering Paraguay under a false identity and being detained at Asunción’s airport while trying to fly to El Salvador before his return to Brazilian custody.
  • The group placed under house arrest includes seven army officers and former foreign affairs adviser Filipe Martins, whose sentences are under appeal after earlier precautionary measures.
  • Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years, remains in Federal Police custody in Brasília and is hospitalized for hernia treatment and a phrenic nerve block for persistent hiccups, which doctors said went well.
