Brazil’s November Holidays: Only Nov. 20 Falls on a Weekday in 2025

Workers assigned to a holiday shift are entitled to double pay or a compensatory day off under the CLT, with exceptions for essential services and any bridge day subject to employer policy or collective agreement.

Overview

  • November has three national holidays: All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2 (Sunday), Proclamation of the Republic on Nov. 15 (Saturday), and Black Consciousness Day on Nov. 20 (Thursday).
  • Black Consciousness Day became a nationwide holiday in 2023, extending the guaranteed day off to all workers across Brazil.
  • Article 70 of the CLT bars work on holidays, but essential sectors and terms set in collective agreements can authorize operations, with affected staff owed double pay or a compensatory day.
  • A Friday bridge after the Thursday, Nov. 20 holiday is not mandatory and depends on an employer decision, collective bargaining, or hour-compensation arrangements.
  • Rules vary by schedule: in 12×36 shifts courts generally do not grant extra pay or time off for holiday work, while intermittent contracts must specify holiday-related additions in the agreed hourly rate.
