Brazil’s Formal Job Creation Falls to 147,358 in August, Weakest for the Month Since 2020

The result missed market forecasts, with year-to-date net hiring near 1.5 million.

  • August’s net gain was 38.4% lower than a year earlier, when 239,069 jobs were created, marking the worst August in the Novo Caged series.
  • From January through August, Brazil recorded a cumulative net creation of 1,501,930 formal jobs, according to the Ministry of Labor.
  • Four sectors added jobs in August—services (81,002), commerce (32,612), industry (19,098) and construction (17,328)—while agriculture shed 2,665 positions.
  • Positive balances were reported in 25 of 27 states, led by São Paulo (45,450), Rio de Janeiro (16,128) and Pernambuco (12,692).
  • The print undershot market projections, with medians cited at roughly 170,000 to 184,000 and individual estimates ranging from 136,000 to 220,000.
