Brazil's Child Labor Rises to 1.65 Million in 2024 as Worst Forms Decline

IBGE reports the increase is concentrated among older Black and Brown boys and says a single-year uptick is not enough to call a trend reversal.

  • The number in the worst forms of child labor (Lista TIP) fell 5.1% to about 560,000, the lowest level in the series.
  • Boys made up 66% of those affected, 66% were Black or Brown, and 55.5% were 16–17 years old.
