Brazil’s Central Bank Says R$9.73 Billion in ‘Forgotten’ Funds Remain Unclaimed

Automatic returns now credit eligible users via PIX following identity verification through gov.br.

Overview

  • The latest tally through September shows 53.3 million people and companies with unclaimed balances, including R$7.6 billion for 48.6 million individuals and about R$2.1 billion for 4.7 million businesses.
  • Since the Valores a Receber program began in 2022, R$12.2 billion has been returned, with R$455.68 million withdrawn in September alone.
  • Users check eligibility on the Banco Central portal and must log in with a gov.br account to view amounts, see the responsible institution, and request payment.
  • An opt-in automatic claim is available to individuals with a silver or gold gov.br account and a CPF-type PIX key, with credits posted directly by the financial institution.
  • Refunds are issued via PIX; institutions outside the PIX return agreement and amounts from joint accounts still require manual requests, and access now uses two-step authentication with facial validation as the BC warns against external links.
