Brazil’s Central Bank Plans Consumer Block on New Pix Keys, Expands Anti-Fraud Tools

The planned Registrato control would let people preempt unauthorized key creation by requiring banks to consult a central flag.

Overview

  • BC officials said the Pix-key block is under preliminary study with no launch date, and it would be activated by users in Registrato’s Meu BC area.
  • Separately, a service to block the opening of new bank and payment accounts begins on December 1, 2025, with institutions required to query the BC database before onboarding.
  • The initiative aims to curb identity-driven fraud and improper inclusion of new holders in joint or corporate accounts by giving individuals toggle-style control over new registrations.
  • On November 11, director Renato Gomes said the BC is designing a standardized on-screen warning for suspicious Pix transfers and working to automate blocks when a key is flagged as fraudulent in the DICT.
  • Recent measures include automatic blocking of suspicious keys and a contestation button in banking apps, with the BC reporting over 245 million keys removed in recent months and MED 2.0 set to be optionally active from November 23.
