Brazil’s Big Cities Set January Fare Hikes for Buses, Metro and Trains

Officials say contractual cost formulas and rising subsidy burdens necessitate the adjustments.

  • São Paulo city will raise municipal bus fares from R$ 5,00 to R$ 5,30 on January 6, with Bilhete Único credits bought by 11:59 p.m. on January 5 still debited at R$ 5,00 for up to 180 days.
  • São Paulo state set metro and commuter-train fares at R$ 5,40 from January 6, keeping existing gratuities and stating the adjustment is below recent inflation while maintaining multibillion-real support for the system.
  • Rio de Janeiro decreed a R$ 5,00 municipal bus fare from January 4 for buses, BRT, VLT and related services, with operators remunerated at R$ 6,60 and the IRK set at R$ 9,00 from January 1 to be covered in part by subsidies.
  • Florianópolis will charge R$ 6,20 with Cartão Cidadão and R$ 7,70 for cash or QR Pix from January 1, and will stop accepting cash payments on board starting January 5, restricting cash to terminals.
  • Belo Horizonte set most city bus fares at R$ 6,25 from January 1 and will adjust metropolitan lines on January 9, while CIOESTE cities (Osasco, Barueri, Carapicuíba, Jandira, Itapevi) move to R$ 6,10 on January 5 and Campinas lifts the basic fare to R$ 6,00 on January 1.
