Brazil’s Banks to Launch Nationwide Debt-Negotiation Drive on Nov. 1

Backed by regulators, the campaign centralizes talks through bank channels or Consumidor.gov.br to give overdue borrowers structured options.

Overview

  • More than 160 financial institutions will participate in the Nov. 1 initiative coordinated by Febraban with support from the Central Bank, Senacon and state Procons.
  • Negotiations can be conducted directly with participating institutions or via the Consumidor.gov.br portal using a silver or gold gov.br account.
  • Special terms may include installment plans, discounts on total balances or reduced refinancing rates, defined by each participating institution.
  • Eligible obligations are overdue unsecured debts such as credit cards, overdrafts and payroll-deducted loans, excluding debts secured by assets and time-barred claims.
  • Superindebted consumers will follow a Procon-assisted pathway to map debts and design a payment plan, following a previous edition that renegotiated about 1.4 million contracts in March 2025.
