Brazil's Alcohol Abstinence Hits 64% in 2025, Led by Sharp Drop Among Young Adults

Public-health data still show rising alcohol harm.

Overview

  • An Ipsos-Ipec survey for CISA reports abstinence rose to 64% from 55% in 2023, driven by 18–24 year-olds (46% to 64%) and 25–34 year-olds (47% to 61%).
  • Increases in non-drinking were strongest among people with higher education, socioeconomic classes A/B, and residents of the Southeast, particularly in metropolitan areas and capitals.
  • Heavy episodic drinking remains concentrated among men, adults 25–44, those with secondary education, and residents of the North/Central-West.
  • Among abusive drinkers, 82% believe they drink moderately and only 9% acknowledge overuse and say they need to change.
  • Datasus records show 73,019 alcohol-attributable deaths in 2023 and 418,467 hospitalizations in 2024, continuing an upward trend since 2010.
