Overview
- Juliana Marins, 26, slipped from a trail above Mount Rinjani’s crater lake on June 21 and tumbled roughly 1,600 feet into a steep ravine.
- Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency teams began operations immediately and, after locating her with drones on June 23, found her body on June 24.
- Rescuers deployed thermal drones, helicopters, mountaineering gear and rope systems but were repeatedly turned back by dense fog, overhanging cliffs and unstable sandy slopes.
- Indonesian authorities closed the Mount Rinjani hiking route to support the evacuation effort and honour Marins and her family.
- Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said its embassy in Jakarta helped coordinate the operation, and Marins’ family disputed reports that she had been reached and given food and water.
