Brazilian Cities Raise Public Transport Fares To Start 2026

Officials attribute the increases to higher costs, with gratuities preserved.

  • São Paulo will lift municipal bus fares to R$5.30 and metro/CPTM tickets to R$5.40 on Jan. 6, with the integrated Bilhete Único fare rising to R$9.38 and pre-recharge at old rates allowed until 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 5.
  • Rio de Janeiro implements a new R$5.00 fare across municipal buses, BRT, VLT and vans on Jan. 4, up from R$4.70.
  • Belo Horizonte raised the main bus fare to R$6.25 on Jan. 1, Florianópolis increased prices and goes cashless from Jan. 5 (QR code R$7.70; Cartão Cidadão R$6.20), and Fortaleza set the full fare at R$5.40 with officials citing cost pressures and lower demand.
  • Across Greater São Paulo, 12 municipalities increased fares, including Guarulhos (R$6.20), Itaquaquecetuba (R$6.30) and Ribeirão Pires (R$6.40), with additional adjustments in Osasco, Barueri, Carapicuíba, Itapevi and Jandira starting Jan. 5.
  • In Paraíba, intermunicipal bus routes and the Cabedelo–Costinha ferry adopted average adjustments of about 3.8% to 4.41% from Jan. 1, as published in the state’s official gazette.
