Brazil Widens Weather Alerts With Cyclone Forecast for the South This Weekend

Forecasts indicate a deepening low near Uruguay will trigger severe weather late Sunday into Monday.

Overview

  • INMET keeps alerts active through Saturday morning for intense rain and strong winds across several regions, with rainfall of 20–30 mm per hour or up to 50–100 mm per day and gusts generally between 40–60 km/h.
  • Meteorologists expect the extratropical system to deliver 80–100 km/h gusts along coastal Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and parts of Paraná, with some stronger winds reaching São Paulo on Monday.
  • Persistent rain and unusually cool conditions continue in São Paulo state, as the CGE warns of flooding and falling trees in the capital and the Campinas region enters an INMET storm alert through Saturday.
  • Goiás has already seen hail and damaging winds in municipalities including São Luís de Montes Belos, Porangatu and Mineiros, following a Cimehgo warning for storms with gusts near 50–60 km/h.
  • Authorities advise avoiding shelter under trees, not parking near transmission towers or billboards, unplugging electrical devices during storms, and contacting Defesa Civil (199) or Corpo de Bombeiros (193) for assistance.
