Brazil to Introduce Alphanumeric CNPJ in July 2026

Receita Federal released technical guidance and a simulator to support a gradual rollout that expands identifier capacity and advances tax‑reform unification.

Overview

  • Existing numeric registrations will remain valid, numeric and alphanumeric formats will coexist, and Pix keys linked to current CNPJs will not change.
  • Letters will be randomly assigned with no link to state or legal attributes, the 14‑character length stays, and the verifier digit will use an ASCII‑based mapping.
  • Public and private systems must be updated to read alphanumeric CNPJs or risk issues issuing fiscal documents and onboarding suppliers or clients.
  • The first alphanumeric CNPJs will be issued from July 1, 2026 on a gradual basis, including new registrations and branches, with a detailed phasing schedule still to be set.
  • The shift addresses nearing exhaustion of codes—especially for large networks like banks and churches—expanding possible combinations to nearly 3 trillion and prompting warnings against scams or fee requests.
