Brazil Supreme Court Panel Sentences Bolsonaro to 27 Years for Coup Attempt

An appeals window now delays any incarceration, with Bolsonaro remaining under house arrest.

Overview

  • Four of five justices voted to convict on five counts, while Justice Luiz Fux dissented and backed acquittal.
  • The panel has up to 60 days to publish its ruling, after which the defense can seek clarifications and appeal to the full 11-justice court.
  • Prosecutors linked the case to actions from 2021–2023 and the Jan. 8, 2023 riots, alleging a coordinated effort to overturn the election using plans to detain justices and other measures.
  • Several former officials and military leaders were also sentenced, including Gen. Walter Braga Netto (26 years), Adm. Almir Garnier (24), Gen. Augusto Heleno (21) and Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira (19).
  • The verdict drew immediate U.S. criticism, with President Donald Trump saying he was "very unhappy" and Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling it a "witch hunt" and signaling a response, as Bolsonaro’s allies advance amnesty efforts in Congress.
