Brazil Sets 2026 Federal Holiday Calendar With 10 Holidays, 9 Optional Days

Weekday scheduling increases the chances of long weekends.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Management and Innovation published a portaria in the Diário Oficial da União on December 30 that formalizes the 2026 schedule for the federal public administration.
  • The calendar includes 10 national holidays and nine pontos facultativos, with nine holidays falling on weekdays and only the Republic Proclamation landing on a Sunday.
  • Federal agencies must follow the official schedule, with no anticipation or adoption of state or municipal optional days, except for a state’s legally defined data magna and municipal centenary dates.
  • The norm permits up to four municipal religious holidays where set by law, requires maintenance of essential services, and bars ad hoc changes to optional days.
  • Public servants may obtain authorized leave for days of religious observance with required compensation by hours or PGD deliverables, while local additions remain in effect in their regions, such as Bahia’s 2 de Julho and Salvador’s December 8.
