Brazil Restores Power After Nationwide Outages Tied to Paraná Substation Fire

Officials attribute the cuts to a localized equipment failure that triggered automatic load-shedding, with formal investigations now underway.

Overview

  • An overnight fire at the 500 kV Bateias substation in Campo Largo, Paraná, at 00:32 local time disconnected the South from the rest of the grid as the region was exporting about 5,000 MW.
  • The Esquema Regional de Alívio de Carga (ERAC) automatically shed roughly 9.7–10 GW across the Sistema Interligado Nacional, with power restored within about 1h30 in most regions and by roughly 2h30 in the South.
  • Executives and technical data indicate all states and the Federal District saw some interruption, with the largest cuts in São Paulo (2.6 GW), Minas Gerais (1.2 GW), Rio de Janeiro (0.9 GW) and Paraná (0.9 GW).
  • Distributors reported major localized impacts, including 937,000 customers in São Paulo (Enel), 450,000 in Rio de Janeiro (Light), about 300,000 in Brasília (Neoenergia), and roughly 294,000 affected in Pará (Equatorial).
  • Aneel dispatched inspectors to the Bateias site and an ONS regional center and demanded explanations, while ONS prepares a preliminary disturbance analysis this week and a full report within 30 days as experts flag unanswered technical questions.
