Brazil Police Probe Two Attempted Femicides by Fire as Suspects Are Detained

Police link the attacks to jealousy, requesting preventive detention.

Overview

  • Two separate attacks on December 29 in Cubatão (SP) and Salinópolis (PA) involved partners setting women on fire, and both cases were registered as attempted femicide.
  • In Cubatão, a 32-year-old allegedly poured alcohol on his 28-year-old partner and ignited her with a match after a jealousy dispute at home.
  • According to the city, the Cubatão victim suffered burns on about 45% of her body, was sedated on mechanical ventilation, and remains hospitalized in serious condition.
  • In Salinópolis, police believe the suspect used gasoline to burn his partner inside her mother’s home as three children witnessed the attack; the woman and her 11-year-old daughter were hospitalized, and the victim had a protective order.
  • Authorities detained both suspects; in Cubatão an arrest in flagrante was formalized with a request to convert it to preventive detention, and in Pará the suspect was located in Santa Izabel with federal highway police support as forensic work proceeds.
