TSE Opens Window for Voto em Trânsito Ahead of October Elections

The measure lets voters temporarily change their polling place with staggered deadlines for ordinary voters and for election staff.

Overview

  • The TSE opened the request period on Monday, July 20, and ordinary voters have until August 20 to apply while mesários and other election workers have an extended deadline of August 28.
  • Only polling places in state capitals and municipalities with more than 100,000 registered electors will offer voto em trânsito, and regional courts (TREs) published initial lists of enabled locations on July 19 with updates allowed through August 20.
  • Requests are filed online through the Autoatendimento Eleitoral for voters with biometrics on file or in person at cartórios with a photo ID, and applicants must choose the municipality where they will vote.
  • The range of offices a voter can elect depends on location: if the transit municipality is in the same state they can vote for all contested posts, but if it is in another state they can vote only for president; Brazilians registered abroad may use the mechanism only if physically in Brazil.
  • After the election a voter’s registration returns automatically to the original section and anyone habilitated for voto em trânsito who does not vote must submit a justificativa through e‑Título because they cannot justify absence on election day at the transit site.
