Overview
- During an Oct. 30 plenary session, Minister Carlos Augusto Amaral Oliveira said Maria Elizabeth Rocha should not have spoken on behalf of the Superior Military Court and asked that his opposition be entered into the minutes.
- He argued the remarks added nothing because of what he called their superficial and political tone and said such a statement was inappropriate for an ecumenical event.
- Rocha’s Oct. 25 address at São Paulo’s Catedral da Sé sought forgiveness, in her capacity as head of the Military Justice of the Union, for dictatorship-era torture, deaths, disappearances, and judicial errors.
- In her apology, she named Vladimir Herzog, Paulo Ribeiro Bastos, Rubens Paiva, Miriam Leitão, José Dirceu, Aldo Arantes, José Genoino, Paulo Vannuchi, and João Vicente Goulart.
- The ceremony honored Herzog on the 50th anniversary of his killing under torture, and Amaral voiced his dissent in a session held without Rocha present.
