Brazil Mandates Autism Screening for Toddlers in SUS With New National Care Pathway

The initiative targets earlier care through standardized screening, digital tracking, rapid referral across the public network.

Overview

  • All children aged 16 to 30 months in SUS primary care will be screened for autism using the M-Chat as part of routine development checks.
  • Screening results must be recorded in the digital Child Health Booklet and in the E-SUS electronic record to monitor development and guide referrals.
  • Interventions will start based on risk signs without waiting for a closed diagnosis, and an updated Early Intervention Guide is being released for public consultation.
  • The policy strengthens individualized care through the Projeto TerapĂȘutico Singular and defines referral flows linking primary care, Specialized Rehabilitation Centers and mental-health services.
  • The ministry highlights family support and workforce training, including adoption of the WHO caregiver skills program, and announced funding to expand services with the accreditation of 23 additional rehabilitation centers.
