Brazil Launches Pilot Dengue Vaccination With Single-Dose Butantan Shot in Three Cities

Health authorities will track real-world performance to guide a broader rollout.

Overview

  • Day D begins Jan. 17 in Nova Lima (MG) and Maranguape (CE), with Botucatu (SP) starting Jan. 18, vaccinating residents ages 15 to 59, including those previously infected.
  • Maranguape pairs Butantan-DV for adults with Takeda’s two-dose regimen for ages 10 to 14 as part of the local campaign design.
  • Delivery uses UBS clinics, mobile vacimóvel teams and drive-thru sites, and the vaccine is offered free through Brazil’s public health system (SUS).
  • An initial 204,100 doses are allocated: 80,000 to Botucatu, 60,100 to Maranguape and 64,000 to Nova Lima.
  • Butantan-DV is Anvisa-approved and single dose, with trials from 2016 to 2024 showing about 75% overall efficacy, over 91% against severe disease and 100% against hospitalization; the next phase is planned for February to vaccinate about 1.1 million primary care workers, with broader access tied to additional deliveries.
