Brazil Launches Nationwide Multivaccination Drive for Children Oct. 6–31

Officials aim to lift coverage through funding, added doses, app alerts.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Health scheduled the campaign for October 6–31 to update vaccination records for children and adolescents up to 15 years, with a nationwide Day D on October 18.
  • To support the effort, the ministry made an extraordinary R$150 million transfer this year and distributed 6.8 million additional doses, including 1.8 million MMR, 1.6 million yellow fever, 1.1 million varicella and 2.3 million of other vaccines.
  • Yellow fever vaccination will temporarily extend to adults up to 59 in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Paraná, with extra doses concentrated in those states.
  • HPV and measles immunization will be intensified, with HPV prioritized for ages 9–14 and catch-up for 15–19, and MMR offered to people 12–59 as Brazil seeks to prevent reintroduction of measles after 31 confirmed cases this year.
  • The Meu SUS Digital app will send alerts to more than 40 million users and add dose reminders and caregiver linkage, as Health Minister Alexandre Padilha urges parents to use the digital card and counter vaccine hesitancy driven by misinformation.
