• Brazil formally filed a declaration of intervention under Article 63, the ICJ confirmed in a statement on Friday.
• South Africa and Israel were asked by the court to furnish written observations on Brazil’s filing.
• Brazil had signalled in July that it would join the proceedings, citing concern over impunity and condemning Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
• With this move, Brazil joins Spain, Ireland, Mexico and Turkiye among states that have intervened in the case.
• The proceedings continue under January 2024 provisional measures ordering steps to prevent genocidal acts and enable humanitarian access, and media reports say more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.
