Brazil Highway Crashes Prompt Investigations as New Details Emerge

Investigators are shifting from rescue to accountability.

Overview

  • On BR-230 in Soledade (Paraíba), PRF says a truck hit the victims’ car and then other vehicles, with six dead and eight injured; five survivors have been discharged and three remain hospitalized, including one in intensive care.
  • A multi-vehicle crash on BR-476 in Paulo Frontin (Paraná) killed a 60-year-old trucker hauling GLP cylinders; firefighters contained the explosive cargo and the road fully reopened at 3:40 a.m., according to PRF.
  • In São José dos Campos (SP), a 70-year-old man died after a three-car collision at a traffic light; police report the 37-year-old driver who caused the crash was found intoxicated following a refusal to take a breath test.
  • In João Pessoa (PB), the dump-truck driver who ran over motorcyclist Pedro Henrique de Souza, 19, was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, omission of aid and fleeing the scene, with the completed inquiry sent to the judiciary.
  • Other fatal cases under review include a family of three killed on BR-116 in Araci (BA), an overtaking-on-curve collision that killed a 57-year-old woman on MGC-259 in Guanhães (MG), and a frontal car–truck crash on BR-376 in MS that left the driver trapped and dead at the scene.
