Brazil Forensics Blame Intoxication and 122°F Bath for Couple’s Motel Deaths

Relatives challenge the cocaine finding, requesting independent scrutiny.

Overview

  • The chief medical examiner formally ruled the August 11 deaths as exogenous poisoning that precipitated heatstroke, severe dehydration, thermal collapse and organ failure.
  • Toxicology reported extremely high blood alcohol levels and traces of cocaine in both victims, which officials said likely blunted their reactions to dangerous heat.
  • Investigators documented bathtub water near 50°C (122°F) and a space heater running on high inside the São José motel suite.
  • Civil Police said 16 forensic examinations of the room, the couple’s car and CCTV ruled out electric shock, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning and third-party involvement.
  • The victims were officer Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and business owner Ana Carolina Silva, 41, who went out after their daughter’s fourth-birthday celebration; the child is now in relatives’ care.
