Brazil Fisherman Survives 17 Hours at Sea on Fridge Door After Sinking

An inquiry will assess whether severe storms caused the sinking after the survivor was discharged from hospital.

Overview

  • A Polícia Militar de Santa Catarina helicopter found the man near the Tamboretes islets roughly 4 kilometers from shore and hoisted him aboard.
  • He was taken to Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças in São Francisco do Sul, where doctors said he was stable and he was released on Jan. 14.
  • His father, Valmoci Vicente Bento, 58, was found dead later Tuesday about 9 kilometers from the coast and approximately 350 meters from the sunken vessel.
  • Officials have not determined the cause of the sinking during a shrimping trip, and investigators are examining whether recent severe storms contributed.
  • The Brazilian Navy published video of the rescue on social media and announced an administrative investigation into the incident.
