Brazil Cities Finalize New Year’s Eve Operations With Crowd, Security and Fireworks Plans

Cities expect massive crowds, prompting extensive deployments to manage safety and mobility.

  • São Paulo forecasts 8 million people on Avenida Paulista with low-noise fireworks and will deploy 1,950 Military Police officers, more than 1,100 municipal guards, seven medical posts, drones and facial-recognition cameras, plus wide road closures from Dec 31 to early Jan 2.
  • Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana plans a 12‑minute fireworks show from 19 barges, with organizers estimating about 5 million attendees and 70 acts on 13 stages citywide, including performances by Gilberto Gil, Ney Matogrosso, João Gomes and Iza.
  • Fortaleza’s Aterro da Praia de Iracema hosts two days of shows through Dec 31 with an estimated 1.5 million for the countdown, extensive street blockages, dedicated bus drop-off zones, medical units and an accessibility area; the Conjunto Ceará polo expects 40,000 with parking bans and intersection closures from 15:00.
  • Manaus issued access rules for three official sites and will use low-noise fireworks while banning glass, weapons, chairs, alcohol, fireworks and drones; other cities, including Cubatão and Caraguatatuba, also announced reduced-sound shows, with Cubatão planning 15 minutes of silent pyrotechnics.
  • Febraban confirmed banks will be closed on Dec 31 and Jan 1 with no compensations or TED processed, while digital channels such as internet banking and Pix remain available and transport systems run special Réveillon operations.
