Brazil Bans Online Betting With Immediate Shutdown Timetable

The government says the ban will curb household overindebtedness, prompt platform blocks on Oct. 6, set voluntary withdrawals through Oct. 5, threaten billions in tax receipts, remove major football sponsorships

Overview

  • The provisional measure took immediate effect, forbids new deposits and new advertising, allows voluntary user withdrawals until 23:59 on Oct. 5 and directs Anatel and CGI.br to block sites and apps from 00:00 on Oct. 6.
  • Regulators ordered operators to report remaining account balances so banks can make automatic refunds between Oct. 9 and Oct. 14, while platforms will be available only for users to withdraw until the blocking date.
  • Betting firms have filed suits at the Supreme Federal Court seeking suspension of the measure and the federal government has sued 17 operators seeking about R$1 billion in damages, setting up parallel legal battles.
  • The move hits Brazilian football funding hard: 14 of 20 Série A clubs had betting master sponsors and several clubs including Flamengo, Botafogo, Grêmio and Santos have already removed betting logos from kits and social posts.
  • The Ministry of Finance estimates roughly R$1.7 billion sits on platforms now and projects about R$800 million in monthly tax revenue will stop, while clubs and league bodies press for transition windows and a postponed government meeting leaves short-term uncertainty.
