Brazil Adds 213,002 Formal Jobs in September, Beating Forecasts

A stronger-than-expected print still points to moderation versus 2024.

  • The net gain was 15.5% below September 2024’s 252,237 and above August’s 147,358, signaling slower hiring year over year with a monthly pickup.
  • Services led with 106,606 jobs, followed by industry (43,095), commerce (36,280), construction (23,855) and agriculture (3,167).
  • All 27 states recorded positive balances, led by São Paulo (+49,052), Rio de Janeiro (+16,009) and Pernambuco (+15,602), with the smallest gains in Roraima (+295), Amapá (+735) and Acre (+845).
  • Average admission pay was R$2,286.34, down from August but slightly higher in real terms than in September 2024.
  • Non-typical hiring expanded, with a net 44,781 intermittent, apprentice, temporary and similar positions in the month and 379,035 so far this year.
