Brazil Adds 147,358 Formal Jobs in August, Weakest August Since 2020

The shortfall versus forecasts prompted renewed criticism of high borrowing costs from the labor minister.

Overview

  • The August net gain fell below market projections, which clustered around 170,000 to 184,000 jobs.
  • Services led hiring with 81,002 positions while agribusiness shed 2,665 roles, and commerce, industry and construction all posted gains.
  • Employment rose in 25 of 27 states, led by São Paulo (+45,450), followed by Rio de Janeiro (+16,128) and Pernambuco (+12,692).
  • The average admission wage reached R$2,295.01, up 0.56% from July, with 75.1% of hires on typical contracts and 24.9% on non‑typical terms such as part‑time and apprenticeships.
  • Year to date, formal employment has grown by 1,501,930 jobs as the labor minister labeled the slowdown an alert for the Central Bank, while the bank’s president noted tight monetary conditions alongside a strong job market.
