Brazil Added 1.8 Million Formal Jobs in 2024, RAIS Shows

The ministry’s RAIS registry points to a services-led expansion with modest wage gains alongside persistent pay gaps.

  • The formal employment stock reached 57,132,156 links on December 31, 2024, a 3.3% increase versus the end of 2023.
  • Services drove the expansion with 1,199,196 additional links (+3.7%), followed by industry (+3.5%), construction (+2.9%), commerce (+2.2%) and agriculture (+0.7%).
  • All regions posted growth, led by the Central-West (+5.5%) and the Southeast (+3.5%).
  • Women saw faster gains than men (4.3% versus 2.5%), average formal pay rose to R$4,290.24, the median was R$2,647.10, and the Gini nudged up to 0.4503.
  • By demographics, pardas (+13.4%), pretas (+15.2%), whites (+5.6%) and indigenous workers (+11.5%) recorded notable increases, while formal links for Venezuelans rose 37% (+46,130) and for Cubans 74.6% (+6,407), with Argentines (+32.9%) and Paraguayans (+14.8%) also advancing.
