First baseman Matt Carpenter was released by the Atlanta Braves, days after being acquired from the San Diego Padres.
The decision costs the Braves $4 million, as part of Carpenter's $5.5 million salary for next season was covered by the Padres.
Carpenter, a three-time All-Star, revived his career with the New York Yankees in 2022, hitting .305 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs.
However, his performance regressed in 2023, hitting .176 with five homers and 31 RBIs for the Padres.
Carpenter didn't play after Sept. 10 due to right elbow inflammation.
