Brandenburg Sets 2026 Start for Asylum Transit Centre as State Moves to Centralize Reception and Removals

The government says the plan implements the coalition agreement to streamline responsibilities in asylum processing.

Overview

  • Interior Minister René Wilke proposes keeping applicants and people without a right to stay in state-run reception for up to 24 months instead of distributing them after 18 months, with exceptions for families with children.
  • The overhaul introduces state transit facilities, departure centres and short-term departure custody to review status, offer integration steps or carry out removals.
  • The first transit facility is slated to open in the first half of 2026 in Frankfurt (Oder), replacing the current initial reception there, and the minister said capacity will be smaller than today given declining arrivals.
  • A dedicated departure facility is in late-stage talks with a host municipality and will prioritize voluntary returns while allowing deportations where required.
  • The government plans to submit the legal changes this year with a vote expected by early 2026, and a reception-and-departure centre at BER is planned to provide in-state deportation capacity with operation possible after a two-year build around 2028.
