Brandenburg Parliament Rejects Snap Election as BSW Sides With AfD

Woidke plans minority rule with exploratory talks toward a CDU coalition.

Overview

  • The AfD motion to dissolve the Landtag failed in a roll-call vote, with 36 in favor and 47 against, far short of the two-thirds threshold of 59 needed for early elections.
  • The BSW parliamentary group backed the AfD dissolution bid, though some of its members were absent, and a separate AfD attempt to remove vice-president Jouleen Gruhn also failed.
  • Minister-President Dietmar Woidke rejected new elections and said he will govern temporarily as a minority while opening talks with the CDU to assemble a new majority.
  • The SPD–BSW coalition collapsed after internal BSW strife and defections, with all three BSW ministers—Robert Crumbach, Britta Müller and Detlef Tabbert—leaving the party as Crumbach and ex-BSW lawmaker Jouleen Gruhn joined the SPD.
  • Two more BSW lawmakers, Melanie Matzies and Reinhard Simon, resigned from the party and its caucus over the decision to back the AfD but will retain their seats.
