Brandenburg Launches Pilot Prevention Program for Children With Parental Addiction or Mental Illness

Training for educators, daycare staff alongside coaches will equip local professionals to recognize children living with parental addiction or mental illness

Overview

  • About 56,000 children in Brandenburg—roughly one in six up to age 14—grow up with at least one parent facing addiction or mental illness.
  • Officials estimate two-thirds of these youths are at elevated risk of developing addictions or mental health issues without early support.
  • Frontline professionals such as educators, daycare workers and sports trainers will receive specialized qualification to identify at-risk children and link them to help.
  • Local districts and independent cities can apply to host one of three model regions where the project will be piloted and refined.
  • Funding has been pledged by the GKV-Bündnis für Gesundheit, the Auridis Stiftung and the Brandenburg health ministry, with pilots slated to begin later this year.
