Brandenburg Gate Christmas Tree Felled in Thuringia, Now Bound for Berlin

Lighting is scheduled for the first Advent following installation by the THW on Monday.

Overview

  • The 16-meter spruce was cut in Schallenburg, a district of Sömmerda in Thuringia, according to the forestry authority.
  • Workers used a heavy-lift crane to place the tree onto a low-loader in freezing conditions for its transport to the capital.
  • The Technisches Hilfswerk plans to erect the tree immediately after it arrives on Monday.
  • Decorators are expected to add about 14,000 LED lights and hundreds of baubles the following day, local reports say.
  • The forestry spokesman described the selection as a year-round “casting” with strict shape and access criteria, noting this is the eleventh tree sourced from Thuringia.
