Brandenburg's Interior Minister Katrin Lange has decided against using Küstrin-Kietz as the location for a planned deportation center for refugees without residency prospects.
The site, a former Soviet military barracks on the Oder-Island near the Polish border, was deemed unsuitable after Lange's visit and evaluation.
The original proposal, initiated by former CDU Interior Minister Michael Stübgen, included housing for 200-250 individuals in container units with shared facilities.
Criticism of the project came from the state's Integration Commissioner and refugee advocacy groups, who raised concerns about the humanitarian implications of such centers.
Lange confirmed that the search for alternative locations for deportation centers in Brandenburg will continue, as she remains committed to the broader initiative.
