Brandenburg Continues Funding AfD-Linked Foundation Despite Extremism Classification

The Interior Ministry says the party’s status does not automatically extend to the separate foundation, citing no evidence of anti-constitutional activity.

Overview

  • Two of three project applications from the Erasmus-Stiftung Brandenburg were approved in 2025, with about €6,960 paid out so far, according to the ministry.
  • The foundation has received more than €100,000 in state grants since 2022, including roughly €96,000 from 2022 to 2024 for events such as debates on the energy transition.
  • A state law to prevent public funds reaching right-wing extremist networks is under consideration, but the government says its internal deliberations are not finished.
  • Greens and the CDU urge a legal bar on funding, the SPD’s parliamentary leader presses for a statute, and the BSW warns against perceived arbitrariness in exclusions.
  • The AfD calls proposed restrictions an attack on democracy and free speech, and the AfD-linked federal Desiderius-Erasmus-Stiftung has not received federal funding.
