Brahmaputra Board Launches Basistha Riverfront Restoration

Overview

• The project was officially launched on Saturday, June 20, 2026, when Brahmaputra Board chairman Dr. Ranbir Singh laid the foundation stone at the site beside the Board’s Basistha office.
• Officials say the work will cover roughly 370 metres to nearly 0.5 kilometres of left‑bank embankment from the National Highway at Basistha to Gosaibari near Beltola and is scheduled for completion in eight months.
• Planned features include extensive landscaping and plantation, dedicated walking tracks, stepped seating and viewing areas, seating for senior citizens, and nature‑based riverbank stabilisation.
• The stretch was long used as an uncontrolled dumping ground that produced foul odour, mosquito breeding and public‑health concerns, and local residents and the Greater Bhetapara Senior Citizens' Association have welcomed the cleanup.
• The Brahmaputra Board is collaborating with INTACH and says the scheme is modelled on the Uzan Bazar riverfront and will focus on improved sanitation, solid‑waste management and community stewardship to make the site replicable for other river stretches.
