Overview

  • Both Kirkgate Market and the Oastler Centre closed permanently on June 28 after decades of operation in Bradford’s city centre
  • Bradford Council has applied for permission to begin demolition of the former market halls, adjacent Morrisons building and multi-storey car park from October 20 under its City Village scheme
  • Darley Street Market is scheduled to open on July 12–13 as a mixed-use venue hosting traditional stalls alongside dining, entertainment and public event spaces
  • Long-standing traders including the city’s fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers and Roswitha’s deli have secured pitches at the new market while some stallholders remain without space
  • The wider City Village redevelopment will replace the shuttered markets and car park with up to 1,000 new homes plus retail, leisure, business spaces and improved public realm
