Braathens Files Bankruptcy for Airbus Unit as ATR72 Operations Continue

The move follows failed bridge financing after a planned phase-out of the Airbus business.

Overview

  • Braathens International Airways filed for bankruptcy at the Stockholm District Court covering its Airbus operation and Braathens Crew AB.
  • Charter flights for tour operators including Ving and Apollo were canceled immediately following the filing.
  • About 200 employees are affected and are covered by Sweden’s state wage guarantee.
  • Turboprop operations remain outside the proceedings, with Braathens Regional Airlines, Braathens Regional Airways, Braathens People and Braathens Support continuing ATR72-600 services.
  • The Airbus venture launched in 2022 with five aircraft faced delivery delays, higher costs and weaker demand, and efforts to secure bridge funding failed despite owners investing more than SEK 300 million.
