BPCL Posts Big Revenue Gain While Quarterly Profit Falls

Rising crude and inventory costs squeezed refining margins and pushed half‑year earnings sharply lower.

Overview

  • BPCL reported on Oct 23–24 that consolidated net profit for Q2 fell about 21.5% to ₹4,863.05 crore and standalone net profit fell 22.5% to ₹4,993.17 crore.
  • Consolidated revenue rose roughly 29% to about ₹1.58 lakh crore while cost of materials consumed jumped about 44% to ₹74,969 crore, a gap that materially compressed earnings.
  • The company’s refinery throughput rose 6% to 10.41 million tonnes and domestic fuel sales increased about 6.3% to 13.47 million tonnes, showing stronger physical demand and higher utilisation.
  • BPCL disclosed non‑compliance during the half year with board composition and committee rules, including the absence of a woman director, a governance lapse for the state‑owned firm.
  • For the six months to Sept 30 BPCL’s consolidated profit plunged about 77% to ₹2,990.35 crore, reflecting earlier losses and sector‑wide margin pressure tied to crude volatility, inventory writedowns and forex impacts.
