Overview

  • BP’s exploration well at Bumerangue, 404 km off Rio de Janeiro, reached a total depth of 5,855 m beneath 2,372 m of water to secure its biggest find since 1999.
  • The well intersected an estimated 500 m gross hydrocarbon column in a high-quality pre-salt carbonate reservoir covering more than 300 km².
  • Rig-site analysis flagged elevated carbon dioxide levels, and BP has begun laboratory characterization ahead of further appraisal.
  • Bumerangue represents BP’s tenth major discovery in 2025, adding to finds in Trinidad, Egypt, the Gulf of Mexico, Libya, Angola and Namibia.
  • The discovery underpins CEO Murray Auchincloss’s pivot back to oil and gas as BP targets 2.3–2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030 and evaluates a Brazilian production hub.
