Overview

  • Gunfire just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday outside a North York building near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive sent a bullet through a first-floor window, killing an eight-year-old boy as two other units were also hit without injuries.
  • Toronto police say the suspects fled before officers arrived and investigators still have no suspect or vehicle description, with appeals to anyone who was in the nearby playground to come forward.
  • Police and family identified the victim as Jahvai Roy, 8, who was in bed with his mother and had been the youngest member of the One by One Movement’s child and youth council working on anti-bullying.
  • Community plans include a vigil Thursday at 5 p.m. outside 15 Martha Eaton Way, a solidarity rally Friday at City Hall, and a GoFundMe for the family that has raised more than $46,000.
  • Mayor Olivia Chow cited data that most guns seized in 2024 were traced to the U.S. and pointed to added police hires and expanded youth programs as the city marked its 26th homicide of 2025.
