Overview

  • The child was snorkeling near Ocean Reef off Horseshoe Reef when he was bitten above the knee, according to local reports.
  • Trauma Star transported the boy to the Miami trauma center after first responders confirmed a leg bite in radio audio.
  • Authorities notified the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the shark species has not been identified.
  • This is Monroe County’s first reported shark bite since a spearfisher was injured near Key West in July of last year.
